all puns left aside, my trusty macbook just crapped out... I am very disappointed because I had a lot of good worked saved within it, both CAD drawings, and short stories, pictures, a lot of things that I really liked. But it´s hard disk drive just failed...

luckily, I find myself without a need for a computer to work (university lab has me covered) and a job, so I´ll probably be saving up for a good amount of time and god knows I won’t be turning to apple anymore. Which kind of computer would you guys recommend? I´m studying engineering thus I need a machine that can do heavy work (I know a desktop is a better option but I need an allrounder)

My MacBook Air has been the longest lived, best laptop I’ve ever had. I’ve had it for about 5 1/2 years. Unfortunately, none of their current lineup fits my budget that a windows machine can’t do better. If it crapped out on me all the sudden I’d probably get a relatively cheap chrome book to handle work stuff until I decided on a legit replacement

You need a laptop? If so, try to get a laptop with Intel’s latest i7 processor. The CPU is frequently identified at i7-8550U or 8th Generation i7.

If you don’t mind not having an SSD, you can get a good price buying a laptop featuring this good, powerful processor for a laptop without breaking the bank.

Dell Inspiron, 15.6" screen, 8GB RAM, 2 TB Hard Drive, showing as $700 on Sam’s Club. Try to avoid HP if possible.

Dell XPS 15. I bought mine when they released the current form factor in late 2015 and have since convinced several of my engineering friends to pick up ones for themselves. Quad core processors, GTX1050s, upgradeable ram, NVME SSDs, and a 10+ hour real world battery life, all in a thin, light package with roughly the same footprint as a 14 inch laptop. I use mine for work as well as gaming and it handles everything I can throw at it. As a bonus it costs over $1000 less than a comparable Macbook Pro. I can’t recommend them enough.

If you want a decent laptop that can do high-end, I would personally recommend something Lenovo!

That being said, I have am older (Win8.1 era) HP laptop running Linux Mint and it’s never let me down so far!

From my experience working at the library, I can also say that ASUS laptops seem to be able to handle some rough care and still work well!

Or, save $50 and go with a 1TB Hard drive instead of 2TB.

https://www.samsclub.com/sams/dell-insp-15-6-2in1-intel-core-i7-8550u/prod21451392.ip?CAWELAID=730010300001866367&pid=_CSE_Google_PLA_1013571964&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=239332128468&wl4=pla-391693511423&wl5=9027640&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=1247713&wl11=online&wl12=980071818&wl13=&wl15=49296608829&wl17=1o1&veh=sem&source=ifpla

Or, $700 for the same specs as the other $700 Dell, but with the added bonus of a Nvidia 940MX. Nothing spectacular as a GPU, but for a laptop and using programs that benefit from the use of a GPU, it will give the extra oomph you need.

Whatever you get you absolutely need a back up travel drive! Save all your stuff to external locations and duplicate it all multiple times. You really can’t go wrong any style you pick flash/ssd/old school spinning disk. Good luck

Not everybody can justify spending $950+ on a laptop, especially after factoring in the after-taxes cost.

The thing is that once you start comparing them to similar competitors they aren’t that pricey at all. The XPS 15 is by far the best bang for your buck when looking at premium 15 inch laptops.

XPS 13/15. Any x86 laptop under $750 is pretty much garbage for longevity. Some ASUS models are exceptions to this. Worth it to spend the extra few hundred now for something that will be working 6 years from now instead of quitting after 3.

While true, I would never ever get an Inspiron. Of the pre-built computers you could buy, it rivals the Toshiba Satellite for (lack of) longevity. The processor will march on while the rest of it fails. lol

What year is your MacBook? I got screwed over and my Macbook never arrived. Because if it only needs a HDD I’ll take it off your hands.

I don’t have any specific recommendations outside of avoiding Dell Inspiron machines and being careful with HP. In my experience, Inspirons don’t last a very long time if you use them for heavy tasks. Some HP machines suffer from the same issue. From what I read, Dell XPS machines (even used ones) are worth the cash. I also have enjoyed Lenovo, Acer, and Asus units.

Thinkpad, nuff said. Get one with a small ish ssd and pair with cloud storage for big files so you avoid a repeat. I use Dropbox pro, but any would work. If you need cad, get one with a decent graphics card and your off to the races. Ssd should be a priority over just about anything as any decent (i5 and up) cpu will do what you need. Don’t be afraid to go used as thinkpads are very durable. Just be sure to do a clean install on the OS if going the used route.

How much do you want to spend? I’d recommend Dell XPS 15 or 13, or Dell Latitude. Make sure you’re buying intel core i5-7xxx or i5-8xxx, and if you have the money, buy i7-7xxx or i7-8xxx. Video card instead of integrated graphics. SSD is a must!! Do not buy a PC with HDD. Touch screens are available on XPS models. Lenovo Carbon X1 is good too. Rest of the laptop world... not something I can recommend.

I’ve seen lightly used XPS 15 with 7th gen i7 for $1000 on Craigslist.

I split time between mine and an Aorus for my dev work. If the XPS15 had more storage cap and true Ethernet I would only use it but I need the full functionality from a more dedicated mobile workstation. I’m waiting on Gigabyte to offer the Aero 15x with a 4k screen the XPS zero bezel design and 4k has spoiled me forever.

I specifically bought my XPS 15 with the 1080p display because some of the programs I need to use don’t play well with display scaling. Sometimes I wish I had more resolution but then I remember how much of a pain it was to use some programs on a 3200x1800 display and am glad I went with the 1080p.

Lenovo T- or P- series

Dell XPS

Anything offering latest gen i7 procs and discrete GPUs is a good start. From there, it’s all about how hardcore you want to go

I like the Air as well. If you get it from the Apple refurb store it’s like new, it comes in like 2 days, it’s warrantied, but it’s cheaper too.
